YMMV / The Doors (1991)

Go To

  • Broken Base: The quality of the film itself remains hotly debated. Is it an ambitious and tragic examination the life of one of the greatest artists of the modern age through a well-crafted lens? Or is it a bloated Narm-filled mess that pisses on the grave of Jim Morisson by portraying him as a boorish drunkard? The even split in audience and critical reception alike, as well as the Creator Backlash from the Doors themselves only adds fuel to the fire. Pretty much the only thing people agree on is that Val Kilmer nails Jim's vocals and stage presence.
  • Narm: Jim Morrison was already quite... grandiose in real life, but add to it Oliver Stone's "turgid attempts to make grand statements about America" (as one review put it) and Val Kilmer's performance, and you get this here.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • Crispin Glover shows up at a party as Andy Warhol, in one of film's great "What the hell was that?" moments.
    • Mimi Rogers makes a sharp impression as the publicity photographer who helps Jim Morrison access his seductive side for the camera.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Lisa Edelstein has a small part as a make-up artist, several years before becoming famous for playing Dr. Lisa Cuddy in House.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Watching Morrison slowly self-destruct on screen can lead to this reaction in some viewers. In fact, this was Roger Ebert's biggest complaint about the film.
