YMMV / The Doom Generation

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: Not many people know that the film is based on a comic strip.
  • Complete Monster: The young and cruel George stands out as one of the few irredeemable characters in the Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy and a representation of the evils lurking in the crumbling hellhole that America has become. George leads a gang of neo-Nazis in harassing random people that they come across, as seen when they try to assault Xavier Red at a music store. The sadistic George reveals himself to be something much worse than a simple troublemaker when he mistakes Amy Blue for his ex-girlfriend and rapes her before brutally killing Jordan White by castrating him with a pair of pruning shears while enjoying every second of it.
  • Faux Symbolism: Every time the characters use the skull lighter, it's a different color, coded to the other characters names. How cute. Also, everything costs $6.66, and the random Catholic, Pledge of Allegiance-reciting Nazis that show up at the end.
  • Ho Yay: Buckets of it every time Xavier and Jordan are left alone together. Now, when we normally say "Buckets" of it....
  • Narm: The ending is supposed to be disturbing but it is so over-the-top that it is actually pretty funny. It involves random Nazis, patriotic music, the Pledge of Allegiance, rape with the Virgin Mary, and emasculation.
  • Narm Charm: As surreal as the ending is, it could also count as Nightmare Fuel.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Like a lot of Araki films, it lives on it's extreme button-pushing Narm Charm.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: For starters, the main characters consist of a idiot and a sociopath, and the trio kill a bunch of characters that are worse than they are. In the words of Kyle Kallgren of Brows Held High, who reviewed the movie, it's like somebody put the worst of 90's pop culture in one movie.
