YMMV / The Death of Captain Marvel

Go To

  • Heartwarming Moments: For as much of a Tear Jerker as it was, The Death of Captain Marvel was absolutely littered with these, up to and including the Skrull Empire, bitter enemies of both Mar-Vell's people the Kree and his adopted homeworld of Earth, sending a general to visit him on his death bed in order to present him with a medal, commending him for his bravery and military accomplishments that he performed as his enemy. Even Thanos pays Mar-Vell one last visit to honor him (in his own way) before his death.
  • Moment of Awesome: For as tragic as his death was, one awesome moment came of it. While the Kree turned their back on Mar, the Skrulls dispatched one of their top generals to present him the highest decoration in the Skrull Empire for being such a Worthy Opponent to them.
  • Tear Jerker: The comic has several tear-jerking moments as Mar-Vell comes to terms with his cancer diagnosis.
    • Mar-Vell telling his lover, Elysius, that's he's dying without dialogue.
    • Rick Jones is devastated that there's nothing to be done and reacts angrily, begging the superhero community at large for help. When talking with Elysius about it, Mar-Vell reflects that while Adam Warlock was content in death, he's going to miss life.
    • Spider-Man has to leave the room at one point in heartbroken disbelief that Mar-Vell is dying of cancer instead of going out in a battle, and eventually gathers himself to watch with the others as he passes.
    • When the Skrull general salutes Mar-Vell as an honorable enemy, even while his own people, the Kree, reject him.
    • And finally, when Thanos comes to reconcile him to death.
    • "He's gone..."
