- Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Anette's time as Nightwish's lead vocalist was controversial: besides the contentious circumstances of Tarja Turunen's departure, many listeners felt her voice simply wasn't powerful or operatic enough for the band. The Dark Element is tailored much more specifically for her, and has received a near-universally positive response.
- Suspiciously Similar Song: "Songs the Night Sings" has a similar symphonic riff to "Escapist" by Nightwish.
- Wild Mass Guessing: "Dead to Me" has been interpreted as a Take That! to Nightwish, which Anette was fired from mid-tour in 2012. Jani (the songwriter) hasn't commented one way or the other; neither has Anette.
