YMMV / The Crescent Moon Kingdoms

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Throne of the Crescent Moon gives us Orshado, ghul-of-ghuls. Having sold his soul to the Traitorous Angel, Orshado aims to gain absolute mastery over the world, unleashing ghuls in the streets to prey upon innocent people, and sending Mouw Awa (who actually seems to be devoted to his "blessed friend" Orshado, who doesn't seem to return the favor) to devour the souls of an entire Badawi tribe. Capturing a palace guardsman and torturing him into madness, Orshado cuts off the man's head and animates it as his Mouth of Sauron, then works his magic through the guardsman so that he might transform every guard in the palace into a ghul servant, slaved to his will. Aiming to become the Traitorous Angel's Regent-on-Earth, Orshado hopes to achieve ultimate power, and drown the world in blood. He appears to have no motivation beyond just doing evil for evil's sake.
  • Genius Bonus: A few examples.
    • The Humble Students are a group of religious thugs who go around whipping people for infractions against the faith. How do you say "students" in Pashto? Taliban. Also doubles as a Bilingual Bonus.
    • The forked sword used by Raseed bas Raseed may be inspired by the Zulfiqar, a similar weapon wielded by Ali ibn Abi Talib.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The fact that the once-shining city is in the hands of a very insane and evil khalif, whose cruelty and incompetence turned half of it into a Wretched Hive.
    • Pretty much anything regarding the Traitorous Angel.
      • the kind of magic he bestows to his servants is horrific to say the least: blood magic powered by sacrifices, pain magic powered by torturing people, and he demands a huge tribute in both blood and pain for it. Adoullah mentions multiple times how it takes multiple victims to create a single ghul, and the fact the Big Bad has so many of them at his command is proof of how powerful and how depraved he is.
      • Ghuls in general are disturbing. Rather than being corrupted jinns or undead humans, these are basically soulless artificial demons shaped from detritus and dead vermin, the lowliest variety are as deadly as five men each, the stronger ones almost overcome the heroes...but that's nothing compared to the most powerful variety: the Skin Ghuls, humans transformed into zombie-like warriors that are literally unkillable, the only way to stop them is killing their creator...oh right, first comes the ritual, where a poor palace guard is tortured for weeks if not months by the Big Bad and then sacrificed, crafting his severed head into the spell focus.
      • "All of those beneath shall serve! All of those beneath shall serve!"
