  • Cult Classic: The film's infamy has earned it a respectable fan base.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The extent to which the filming location near a nuclear testing site contributed to the cancer-related deaths of many of its stars is debated, but this film is still well-known for that Production Curse. It's either that, or "John Wayne as Genghis Khan".
  • Questionable Casting: One of the all-time classic examples: John Wayne as Genghis Khan, chosen as "Worst Casting" by The Golden Turkey Awards. You could make an excuse for his eyes but aside from that, he doesn't look remotely Asian. This opinion was shared by the Duke himself, who only took the role due to contractual obligations and regarded it as an embarrassment for the rest of his life.
  • So Bad, It's Good: The present perception of this film nowadays.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: For all that's wrong with the film, John Wayne gives a very passionate and serious portrayal of Genghis Khan. He may be woefully miscast, but there's no denying that he's putting a lot of effort into his performance. In addition, Agnes Moorehead tries valiantly to bring some gravitas to the proceedings.
