  • Designated Villain: Gibson is the villain of the story, because he kidnaps young Muds and sticks to the mission objective of saving people from Kepler. The Muds are the good guys, because they kidnap, beat, steal and fight anyone, for any reason. Louise is the good guy, because the story runs on Protagonist-Centered Morality.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: Whatever Louise wants to achieve is good, and whoever is opposing her at any moment is evil. This is especially important when she decides in the third act to switch sides and prevent Kepler from receiving the "all green" signal - literally nothing, but her own personal stance on the subject changes and that re-aligns the moral compass of the whole story.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: There is not a single sympathetic character in the story; all three sides of the conflict are self-centered jerks (in fact, the "villain" is the least awful of the lot) and they are driven purely by their selfish desires. To make the story somehow worse, it is filmed in a palette of muted greys, making it unappealing and bleak even on a purely visual level.
