YMMV / The Chairman's Ear

Go To

Season 1 spoilers are unmarked.

  • Ass Pull:
    • Episode 15 got all-but-retconned in the intro of the very next episode with a half-arsed explanation about how it was all just a setup to make Chairman less trusting.
    • Episode 16's finale qualifies as well.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Episode 15's finale. The Chairman shoots Mariusz, who falls down on the floor. Then, after the Chairman says he did that because he believed Mariusz is a spy, the officer currently present in the room, without flinching, grabs the Chairman's gun and fires at him four more times.
  • Discredited Meme: All of the memes spawned by the show ended up discredited rather quickly, due to overuse or real-world cabinet reshuffles.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Adrian, "woodsman from Together Party" for being possibly the only character brave enough to confidently give the Chairman a "The Reason You Suck" Speech as of Season 2.
  • Genius Bonus: Even if you're aware of the ins and outs of Polish politics, you might be surprised to know that Basia, the Chairman's secretary, is loosely based on Barbara Skrzypek, the secretary of real-life Chairman.
  • Heartwarming Moments: In the Christmas Episode of the second season, the President invites the high-ranking Catholic Church official, the Chairman and the opposition leaders for a symbolic Christmas dinner. When nobody arrives, the President and the First Lady end up inviting the cleaning ladies (one of them an Ukrainian immigrant, forced to left her homeland by the Crimean War) to dine with them.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Season 2's Christmas episode, released in 2018, has a character that was forced to leave Ukraine because of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war. The situation of Ukraine has gotten worse since the episode was released; with the 2022 Russian offensive, millions more Ukrainians were displaced and forced to relocate, a large chunk of them staying in Poland.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Episode 10 (aired in March 2017) ends with the Chairman deciding to get rid of the Minister of Environment eventually, which back then seemed rather unlikely (for a variety of reasons beyond the scope of this page). Fast forward to January 2018, and the real-life politician that the Minister was based on did end up dismissed as a result of a cabinet reshuffle.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Calling Andrzej Duda, the then-current President of Poland, "Adrian", as a way to mock him as completely subservient to the gov't (and the real-life Chairman).
    • "For the past eight years...", the first words of PM Beata's Survival Mantra, have reached that status as well.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Mariusz stopping the env'ment minister from shooting the Chairman's cat.
    • The Chairman effortlessly playing the opposition politicians against themselves, then going upstairs to his bed and listening to their squabbling like a bedtime story.
    • Adrian from Together Party, who manages to get into the Chairman's office and call him out on the most recent misdeeds. Even if you don't agree with his monologue, keep in mind very few people in the series have the gall to explicitly tell the Chairman off.
  • Rewatch Bonus: The new office of the Chairman was designed by Mariusz, as a surprise for the Chairman. He also ends up staring down the barrel of a (loaded) handgun, to see if it's silenced. After episode 15, those scenes are put in a new light...
