YMMV / The Catherine Tate Show

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Lauren consistently stupid with brief flashes of genius, or is Obfuscating Stupidity? The girl can recite Sonnet 130, and knows how to say her signature catchphrase in at least 3 languages (English, French and British Sign Language )
    • It's been implied by her teachers that she's perfectly smart but would rather chase boys and court attention than apply herself.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • It's bad enough a mother was showing her newly-outed gay son pictures of men from magazines and asking if he found them attractive in front of his friend, but then shows him the last photo and says "oh but John, I bet he's got a really nice cock."
    • Lauren Cooper straight up dies in a kayaking accident in the 2007 Christmas special. The audience is heard quietly gasping when her friends are shown at her grave, "I'll Be Missing You" playing in the background. At least until they see her epitaph: "I still ain't bovvered".
  • Funny Moments: David Tennant as the Ghost of Christmas Present in Nan's Christmas Carol.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The 2007 Red Nose Day special with David Tennant, for a few reasons:
      • The Doctor Who episode "The Shakespeare Code" would air just weeks after this sketch, where Tennant as the Doctor would get to save the Bard himself.
      • Tate would return to star opposite Tennant in Doctor Who the following year for Series 4.
      • Tate and Tennant would star as Beatrice and Benedick in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing in 2011, so Lauren would get another chance to bust out her iambic pentameter.
    • Colin Morgan's casting as gay son John in the 2007 Christmas Special is this considering he would later become famous for his role as the eponymous hero of Merlin, a show that became famous for its Ho Yay by the bucketload. He would also appear in Doctor Who during Catherine Tate's season as companion, though they did not share a scene together.
    • In one sketch with Derek (played by Catherine Tate under heavy makeup), he meets Bonnie Langford for her autograph. In 2023, Bonnie Langford would reprise her role as old companion Mel Bush and co-star with Catherine Tate (reprising her role as fellow companion Donna Noble) in the final 60th anniversary special of Doctor Who.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The end of Nan's Christmas Carol when Nan throws a nice party for her family and friends and a young relative thanks her for being nice to them.
  • Moment of Awesome: The Drunk Bride sketch, in which a very drunk bride gives a "The Reason You Suck" Speech to her new husband and his entire family at her wedding.
  • Memetic Mutation: All together now, three two one: AM I BOVVERED?
  • Tear Jerker
    • "No one's come up t' see me...No one's come up t' see me..."
      • For further clarification, this line appears in Nan's Christmas Carol. When the Ghost of Christmas Future arrives to show Nan what will become of her, an older-looking Nan is seen sitting all by herself in the corner of a nursing home's recreation room, where her old friends mock her and outright say they hate her. In a shaky, weak voice, Nan hopefully asks the nurse if anyone's come to visit her, and the nurse replies that no one has—just as no one ever does. Nan, about to cry, whispers the above line repeatedly, completely alone and broken.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Some of Tate's critics claim that she copied elements of Little Britain, which itself has been accused of ripping off The League of Gentlemen and The Fast Show.
