- Realism-Induced Horror: Goes without saying for a movie about Domestic Abuse. The abuse that Francine (and by proxy the children) suffer at the hands of Mickey is portrayed in a brutally realistic fashion. And worst of all, this happens in real life to thousands of unfortunate people every day.
- She Really Can Act: This was pretty much the performance that led to Farrah Fawcett being taken seriously as an actress; she received her first Emmy nomination.
