- Ensemble Dark Horse: Spiller. Though a very important character in the books, he's nevertheless a secondary one, and doesn't even appear in the first book. Just about all the adaptations include him anyway, even the Studio Ghibli film.
- Nightmare Fuel: Some scenes in the TV series are truly scary.
- Mild-Eye fits up a huge contraption to smoke the Borrowers out of their home. Pod and Homily are desperately running underground to get away, while George and Arrietty are on the outside of a grating leading into the garden. George manages to remove the grating with a pickaxe.
- Mrs Driver is scary when she is telling off George. When she discovers the Borrowers in their home, she screams in horror; her face is enough to terrify young viewers.
- Mild-Eye is a creepy character, from his face alone.
- The Borrowers have to fight off a crow with their "half-scissor": the crow is first seen as a silhouette towering over them.
