- Angst? What Angst?: Alec doesn't seem to be fazed that much by the fact his father died in the sinking cruise ship at the beginning of the movie. Alec's mother, however, did mention it occasionally during the latter half of the film.
- Nightmare Fuel: The steamer Drake catching fire and sinking in the movie after being struck by lightning. The book’s description, however, is even worse...to the point in which Alec gets a bloody hand from being stepped on by the panicking passengers. And this is a G-rated movie!
- The cobra that menaces Alex on the island can be frightening to a younger audience as well. The book’s version of events creates a Red Herring in which the Black is stomping the ground in rage before the illustrated snake is revealed.
- They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Some readers' reaction to the Genre Shift to horror and sci-fi in later books. The same goes for the film adaptations.
- Values Dissonance: The racial stereotypes in the film, including a Magical Negro and a cowardly Arab.
