YMMV / The Best Two Years

  • Genius Bonus: The chapters and verses of President Sandberg's "spiritual medication" to the elders are seen, but never read or explained in the film, so it's up to the viewer to look up what they say. Elder Johnson's "prescription" is Matthew 5:38-39,note  while Elder Van Pelt's is 2 Nephi 9:42.note
  • One-Scene Wonder: Other than a Freeze-Frame Bonus Early-Bird Cameo at the beginning of the film, President Sandburg gets only one scene, but it's a memorable one.
  • Squick: Elder Calhoun eating the raw fish. Kirby Heyborne's gagging isn't faked.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The style of missionary work depicted in the movie became dated almost immediately after it was released, due to the LDS Church rolling out a new program called Preach My Gospel in 2004. For example, the flip-charts Elder Calhoun and Elder Rogers use while teaching were replaced with lessons that missionaries were supposed to study and allowed to teach as they felt inspired. Additionally, changes in standards for missionary behavior (known as "raising the bar", introduced in 2002, and expanded upon since) mean it's much more likely struggling missionaries like Elder Rogers would be sent home instead of being allowed to spend weeks on their own not teaching. Further changes in 2012 and in the following years have in many ways made modern LDS missionary service unrecognizable compared to the style of proselyting seen here.
