• Base-Breaking Character: Sonny is either an Ethnic Scrappy or else one of the funniest characters in the films.
• Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • Although Evelyn would be considered the lead, Dame Maggie Smith's Muriel was noted by critics to be the funniest character in the film.
  • Graham, especially given his backstory in India and the poignant way in which he deals with his past.
  • Sonny's mother, especially with her increased screen time in the sequel.
• Jerkass Woobie: Muriel is bitter and bigoted, but it's hard not to feel sympathy for her when we find out how shamefully she was treated by the family for whom she worked as a nanny and housekeeper for decades.
• Trailer Joke Decay: Madge's "lord have mercy on my ovaries" in the sequel was overused in every trailer.
