YMMV / The Basil Brush Show

Go To

  • Funny Moments: All of the football match between Dave's School and St. Nigel's School. Wacky Sound Effects and Undercrank abound!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the episode Bend It Like Basil, Dave's PE teacher is played by Bradley Walsh. Walsh would later host The Chase in which Basil would compete on over a decade later.
  • Older Than They Think: The show was first broadcast under that name in 1968. The character first appeared in 1963
  • Values Dissonance:
    • In one episode, Stephen gets a wish that he's irresistible to women and wishes to back to his normal, ugly self. While they are making him dress up as someone from The '60s to mock the fashion of the time, Stephen is wearing so much fake tan that he appears to be in blackface, which doesn't help with the fact that he's wearing an afro wig and is later mistaken for an Indian celebrity by Anil's relative. The episode did get some controversy at the time because the woman who granted Steven's wish was Romani who was trying to sell heather and wooden pegs.
    • The show's depiction of women does raise some questions, Stephen is portrayed as being extremely ugly and unlucky with women so that's the reason why he repulses women. At the same time, there are episodes like "I'm A Celebrity... Let Me Back In The Kitchen" where an attractive woman is only chosen to contest because Stephen finds her attractive and wants to have some alone time with her. Then there's the episode "Molly in Love", where the end of the episode reveals that Dave is also in love and successfully dating a woman who is shown to be significantly older than him, and the main cast is more impressed by how Dave wooed the beautiful woman than horrified by the significant age gap between the two.
