  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Considering Colm's questionable mental state, is it possible that cutting off his own fingers was simply an act of self-harm that he tried to disguise as a vendetta?
    • Dominic's cause of death is left ambiguous: he might have slipped into the water by accident, but there are also strong hints that he was suicidal - and there's also the possibility that his abusive father finally killed him.
    • Before the escalation of the feud, was Padraig ever actually a genuinely Nice Guy as everyone claims him to be, or was he a self-centred Jerkass who used his perceived niceness as his own means of feeling superior to others on the island in the same way Colm used his intelligence and talent for music? It's worth noting, for instance, that while he does clearly sympathise with Dominic's situation with his father and is seemingly the only one willing to even remotely engage with the lad, he still only barely seems to tolerate Dominic's presence while he thinks there's a chance for him and Colm to make up and he makes some fairly snide remarks about both Dominic and Mrs McCormack behind their backs.
  • Award Snub: Garnered a staggering nine nominations at the Academy Awards without winning a single one. In particular, many critics expected the film to be a front-runner in the Best Original Screenplay category.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Jenny the donkey proved to be very popular for being an adorable pet and companion to Pádraic, who's clearly very devoted to her, and her death is largely cited as being the film's saddest and most devastating moment. It's a testament to her popularity that the entire audience erupted into cheers when Colin Farrell mentioned her during his acceptance speech at the 2023 Golden Globes.
  • Memetic Mutation: Pádraic and Colm's "I just don't like you no more"/"But you liked me yesterday" exchange got a bit of traction online through object labeling using the two as a template for various situations, such as a screenwriter and their script.
