• Designated Hero: Brainard becomes this by the midpoint in the film. He's shown stalking Betsy after she angrily breaks up with him and tells them she does not want to see him again (which, after him having missed their wedding three times, she is more than justified in doing), and then immediately after terrorizes and chases her new boyfriend, getting him to crash his car as a result, while he congratulates himself about it. It's really hard to see him as a heroic character again after that.
• Signature Scene: The basketball game where the players are sailing through the air due to Professor Brainard putting flubber on their shoes is an extremely memorable and celebrated sequence.
• Unintentional Period Piece: A film made in The '50s could get away with a joke about the military thinking over blowing up Congress. A film after 9/11… not so much.
