  • Complete Monster: Seemingly mild-mannered John Christie is in truth a depraved Serial Killer. Based upon the crimes of his real-life counterpart, Christie opens the film drugging, sexually assaulting and strangling a woman to death. When the Evans family moves in and the wife Beryl wants help with an abortion, Christie pretends to assist her, only to assault and murder her, before manipulating the hapless husband Tim into taking blame while also murdering Tim's baby daughter Geraldine. Framing Tim, Christie acts as a witness against him at trial to ensure Tim gets hanged for the crime. Christie later murders his own wife when she suspects him and then another woman before finally being arrested with a body count of at least 8 women before the Evans family.
  • Retroactive Recognition: David Jackson (Gan from Blake's 7) plays a constable.
  • Vindicated by History: On its initial release, the movie was considered a box office disappointment and received mixed-to-negative critical reviews, with many finding the anti-death penalty message too on the nose, though the performances (particularly John Hurt, who received a BAFTA nomination) received acclaim. Over the years, it's become better-appreciated as a landmark in the True Crime genre and a solid film in its own right.
