YMMV / Telling Lies

  • Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: While Telling Lies was well-received by critics, many have praised its acting and story over the gameplay itself. It's telling that a fanmade compilation on YouTube splicing all of the video conversations together in chronological order has several comments from players wishing you could have done this in the actual game.
  • Narm:
    • In the first part of the game, the reflection of the protagonist Karen Douglas clearly goes through a repeated cycle of movements and reactions, particularly a little shake she does that happens over and over. Fortunately, these are less notable in the later segments of the game.
    • All three of the game's endings feature the main female characters, including older versions of Dave's two daughters, narrating what will happen to themselves later on. It's delivered in stilted voice over and can feel quite awkward, especially considering the more candid moments seen during the game's videos.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Many players have criticized the video fast forward/rewind functions for lacking an option to skip to the beginning or end of any clip. Any video you play starts from the first mention of the word you searched to find it, meaning you sometimes have to rewind for several minutes to see the entire thing.
  • Spiritual Successor: To Her Story, which also involves you searching keywords to find the relevant video clips to piece together the story.
