YMMV / Tandy Computer Whiz Kids

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • The obsession Ms. Wilson and Alec and Shanna have with Tandy products, including knowing their technical specifications apparently from memory even when they claim to have never used the products before, and the steady stream of new products the class gets on a regular basis, has prompted speculation the school has some sort of deal with the company to get them the products, or that Alec and Shanna (and possibly Ms. Wilson) are plants from Tandy showing off the computers to discretely market them to their classmates.
    • Is Ms. Wilson an operative of Lex Luthor and has infiltrated the school as Alec and Shanna's teacher due to the relationship they have with Superman, Supergirl and Wonder Woman?
    • Most of the comics open with Alec recapping his summer vacation. Does he suffer from short-term memory loss? Is the class stuck in a time loop?
    • Alec and Shanna act rather unrealistically in many of the comics and have awkward dialogue and an obsession with computers and learning. Are they perhaps robots or aliens trying to pass as students?
    • The abundance of field trips and new Tandy products the kids enjoy comes at the cost of the school slashing funding, which is why in some comics the kids don't seem to have desks or are not shown doing schoolwork, Ms. Wilson has nothing to teach from.
    • The kids of Ms. Wilson's class have been brainwashed into obedience to Alec and Shanna and/or the Tandy corporation.
  • Anvilicious: Drugs Are Bad, mm'kay? And if you didn't get it the first time, they'll make sure to tell you again in the next issue.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Community Action Program has an anti-graffiti message. However, Alec and Shanna's arguments boils down to graffiti is ugly (which is a matter of opinion), it's "pollution" (somehow), and it shouldn't be considered art (which again is a matter of opinon). Meanwhile, Zeke's arguments, such as claiming graffiti is an "Art for the masses", are more convincing.
  • Sweetness Aversion: Alec and Shanna are way too perfect to be believable as kids — they are excited by school and learning, even during their summer vacation they spend their time doing community service, charity work, and educational pursuits, and in one comic Alec claims that he organized a get-together of kids to discuss planning their futures up to college and beyond.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Just the fact that the Tandy Corporation and Radio Shack were the ones making these comics is a pretty big clue as to the decade they came out in. To say nothing that even by the mid-90s, the products they were boasting about were old and outdated. One issue has a woman using a cell phone, which is a device the size of a briefcase.
