YMMV / Tales from Jabba's Palace

  • Complete Monster: "A Bad Feeling: The Tale of EV-9D9": EV-9D9 was one of the few original EV-series of supervisor droids who managed to escape the recall and destruction of her model, developing soon afterward a sadomasochistic personality with a near-organic fascination with pain and the lengths her fellow droids could sustain. "Ninedenine" destroyed a quarter of Cloud City's droid population before endangering the generators that kept the entire city afloat simply so she could have time to make her getaway. "Ninedenine" was soon after employed as the droid supervisor in Jabba the Hutt's palace, programming the droids there with pain receptors otherwise reserved for the most human of droids to torture them as much as she could. Her personal laboratory consists of a pen filled with grotesque mechanical abominations sustained for cycles at a time in states that keep them in as much pain as possible, something she hopes to replicate on thousands more in the future to conduct "symphonies" of the agony she delights in.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Go here.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Ree-Yees. He's a lonely, pathetic, exiled drunk who seems to be a constant Butt-Monkey - but he brought it all on himself by murdering one of his own species and then trying to cut a deal with the Empire and can be xenophobic and hot-headed too boot.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Being imprisoned in the Sarlacc's belly is elaborated upon in disturbing detail. First off, you are rendered unable to move as you are digested. Then, the Sarlacc reveals itself to be quite the sadist as it exposes Boba Fett to the collective memories and visions of the other victims, both gone and still around. That's right, the Sarlacc not only claims your body, it also claims your mind. Oh, and it's revealed they reproduce by space-borne spores, so they can turn up anywhere.
    • EV-9D9, who tortures droids to taste their equivalent of pain and regards herself as an artist. One of her greatest ambitions is to build a wall of dismembered droid parts and minds, feeding its own pain and horror back onto itself in an ever-growing loop of suffering.
  • Older Than They Think: Many fans assume that the short story "A Barve Like That" was responsible for the Retcon that Boba Fett survived falling into the Sarlacc pit in Return of the Jedi. While this was the first book that depicted Fett's survival, it wasn't the first Star Wars Legends work that used the idea: the Marvel Comics series also revealed that he survived in issue #81 (the first issue that takes place after Return of the Jedi), although the details are slightly different than in the books. But that issue is frequently overlooked, along with most of the Legends content published between 1983 and 1991.
  • The Woobie: Malakili's only friend is an abused pit monster whose life is in constant danger, Oola is a naive girl barely out of her teens who is sexually harassed and beaten or threatened with a horrible death whenever she resists, and you will hate all the other Gamorreans intensely for their bullying of poor slow-witted Gartogg.
