YMMV / Taking Back Sunday

Go To

  • Signature Song: "Cute Without The 'E'" and "MakeDamnSure" for the fanbase, and hands-down the latter for mainstream listeners.
  • Tear Jerker: "Everything Must Go", "Ghost Man On Third", "Your Own Disaster", "Better Homes and Gardens".
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Ever since their second album, fans have been complaining about the band's stylistic changes.
  • Tough Act to Follow: Tell All Your Friends is considered one of the definitive emo records of the 2000s. Everything after that is extremely subjective.
  • Vindicated by History: Their second album Where You Want to Be received some negative reviews and backlash from part of the fanbase for being a step down from their first album at the time of release. Today, it's being regarded as their third best album after TAYF and Louder Now, with some claiming it as even better than Tell All Your Friends. This might be because of newer fans who grew up with the album, or because New Again and Taking Back Sunday are generally considered so much worse.
    • Louder Now also faced some minor backlash at the time, mainly because it was the band's first album on a major label and spawned some of their biggest hits. Today it is generally spoken in the same breath as Where You Want to Be in terms of being just as good (or even better) than TAYF.
  • What Could Have Been: They performed a new demo in 2003 called "You Can Slow Dance on the Inside", which unfortunately only exists as a poor quality video. And then John and Shaun left. They eventually gave the title to a different song in the second album. Nobody knows what became of the song, not even after reuniting the TAYF lineup.
  • Win Back the Crowd: After losing quite a bit of their fanbase in New Again, many fans consider their self-titled album to be much better, since the original lineup was restored, and even more so after Happiness Is.
    • They won back the crowd again with 152, which generally positively received by the fanbase.
