YMMV / Tabaluga

Go To

In General

  • Broken Base:
    • While season 1 of cartoon is generally said to be good, plots of seasons 2 and 3 are cause of dispute among some fans.
    • 2018 CGI movie is considered by some to be a downgrade of what Tabaluga was.
  • Signature Song: "Nessaja", the final song of the first concept album, is perhaps the most recognizable track of the franchise. As well as a plethora of Updated Re-Releases, it even received an English-language remix by Scooter and serves as the credits song to the animated series and the 2018 movie in both English and German.

The Animated series

  • Adaptation Displacement: Combined with No Export for You in case of music albums outside Germany, many are surprised that Tabaluga is not only a cartoon, at least until the CGI movie came out.
  • Can't Un-Hear It: Polish fans have this with Tabaluga's and Arktos' voice actors - Tomasz Bednarek and Tomasz Grochoczyński, respectively.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Many Poles in their 20s and 30s like the series, because it was part of their childhood. It's also a possible reason why Polish dub is the easiest one to find online.
  • Growing the Beard: Subverted, since more plot holes started to show in seasons 2 and 3.
  • Ho Yay: Arktos' butler, James, seems a bit too concerned about his master's welfare.
  • Memetic Mutation: Jakubie, zrób mi loda!Explanation
  • Subbing Versus Dubbing: With internet's growth, fans around the world gained access to other language versions of the series, which uncovered many inconsistencies between them. In result, knowledge of English version is sort-of required by fans.

2018 movie

  • Awesome Moments: The creators must have known that "I can turn the fires of hell into steam" was the most badass line in the Villain Song. It's where the music crescendos before the chorus. The animation shows Arktos rising upwards while shooting ice beams like a laser light show. And in the English dub, Benedict Campbell sings this line in a powerful, almost soulful way.
  • Awesome Music: "Devil in White," Arktos's Villain Song, is an epic Rotten Rock & Roll number in which he gloats about his power using lines such as "I can turn the fires of hell into steam."
  • Complete Monster: Arktos is a sorcerous snowman using his magics to conquer Iceland and oversee a total genocide of all dragons. Arktos has wiped out nearly the entire dragon race, and is first seen as he murders the last two survivors, hoping to kill their child in the process but failing. Creating an artificial daughter named Lily to serve as bait, Arktos lures in the last dragon child, Tabaluga, and showcases the frozen corpses of dozens of dragons to the boy before once more attempting to kill him. After endangering all of Greenland with a war, Arktos tries one final time to finish off Tabaluga and Lily both, bragging about his plans to then dominate the world and even threatening the entirety of Iceland with death when they stand up to him.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Many fans, who could only watch the animated series, said this about Tabaluga's design.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The buildup to the final showdown between Tabaluga and Arktos suggested that it will top Arktos' death in the cartoon, but instead Arktos was shrunk to the size that the biggest part of him was his hat.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Arktos baits Tabaluga to walk closer to the ravine underneath Arktos' palace. Full of dragon bodies, to be exact.
