YMMV / TPF: Louder and Prouder S1 E4 "Father Figures"

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The episode isn't very subtle about its messaging: there is nothing wrong with being gay or having gay parents, and singling someone for either reason is cruel and unusual.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The episode comes on the heels of the controversial "Don't Say Gay" bill in Florida, and Disney CEO Bob Chapek's equally controversial response to it, refusing to condemn it and promising to support LGBTQ+ individuals through their content. It's especially fitting when Zoey announced she would remain neutral about the bullying Maya and KG were getting because she was running for class president and didn't want to jeopardize her votes.
    • Suga Mama's disgust at Oscar's homophobia becomes both this and Heartwarming in Hindsight when the second season's premiere "Old Towne Road Part 2" revealed that she herself was a victim of marital discrimination. Suga Mama once loved a Native American man named Quanah and they tried to get married, but at the time in Oklahoma it was against the law for Black people to marry anyone who wasn't Black. Seeing as how a meaningful relationship she had wasn't allowed to continue due to prejudice, Suga Mama knew how to empathize with Barry and Randall's marriage being judged.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Whether you like Maya or not, she and her brother didn't deserve to get bullied for having two dads.
