YMMV / Swamp Thing Annual No. 2: "Down Amongst the Dead Men"

  • Fridge Brilliance: At first reading, Alec Holland's claim that there are no strangers in Heaven because it's too small, coupled with the Spectre's claim that there are no friends in Hell because it's too large, may come across as an extremely cynical view of the human condition. Is the story implying that there are far more bad people than good people, or that the average person's chance at redemption is slim because the standards are prohibitively high? Not necessarily. There's another way to read it: perhaps Hell seems huge and lonely to its inhabitants because they've always scorned true friendship and regard for others. And perhaps Heaven seems small and intimate to those within because they've always genuinely liked and cared for others and thus have easily made friends with all sorts of people.
