YMMV / Swamp Thing (2019)

Go To

  • Adorkable: When Jason Woodrue really gets talking about his field of expertise, he has a tone of an almost childlike excitement and delight to him.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Abby. Some find her a smart, capable and level headed young woman who is attempting to deal with suddenly being thrust into a world of fantastical and horrific things. Others claim she's a Damsel in Distress who falls apart at the drop of a hat and express frustration that she blatantly disregards her extremely important job in favour of constantly running out to the swamp to be with Alec/Swamp Thing.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Abby suddenly not believing she's really interacting with the ghost of Shawna (who's possessing Susie at the time), first asking Susie if Maria had put her up to it, and after Shawna reveals herself, she snaps that it's not real and Shawna's dead. She then accuses Madame Xanadu of trying to trick her and that she believes in science over "magic"... and this comes after everything she's seen and experienced so far!
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Cassidy, Harlan and Liz - Cassidy for being a Deadpan Snarker whose actor is clearly having the time of his life in the role, and Harlan and Liz for being Badass Normal characters who are sensible, logical and down to Earth and who are not made into "token gay" stereotypes.
    • Madame Xanadu also qualifies to a lesser extent.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • One of Alec's subconscious use of his powers in "Brilliant Disguise" is to grow a tree full of fruit for Abby to eat. You get the sense that this is not just born of Alec's love for Abby, but the Green showing their acceptance of Abby.
    • The Phantom Stranger's interactions with Alec. You almost get the feeling that this is the swamp itself trying to reach out to him in friendship.
  • He Really Can Act: Derek Mears, who is primarily known for being a stuntman and monster guy in B-grade slasher movies, has received notable acclaim from fans and critics for believably selling the complexity and torment of the title character even under a ton of prosthetic makeup.
  • Mis-blamed: Most people believe the reason for the cancellation is because DC Universe is potentially getting absorbed into WB's upcoming streaming service HBO Max, but in reality, it's due to an accounting error making production of the show more expensive than they wanted to afford.
  • Nausea Fuel: Enjoy extreme closeups on flesh being torn apart by vines and rotted corpses leaking brackish swampwater or covered in vines? Well, boy, do we have a show for you!
  • Special Effect Failure: In the very first episode, a young boy is swinging a machete at Harlan and you can hear the blade clinking/thudding against Harlan's suit. When the scene cuts to a frontal view, the boy is much farther back and there's no way he could be making contact.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Some feel this way about Alec, saying they would have preferred the show spend more time on him as well as his and Abby's relationship before turning him into Swamp Thing.
    • Swamp Thing himself, as many point out that he's technically not even the main character, and that they would have preferred the show spend more time on him instead of Abby and the town.
  • Tear Jerker: Liz's father's hallucinations while he's infected with the Hate Plague - he gets flashbacks to the night where his mother was murdered in front of him by some thugs who were attempting to rob the restaurant. His reactions to their taunts and jeers are heartbreaking.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The frequent Body Horror is actually largely portrayed with practical effects reminiscent of The Thing (1982), with just the slightest touches of CG enhancement that blends in perfectly.
