YMMV / Suzume

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Sōta unaware that Suzume likes him in a romantic way? Or he's aware of it but doesn't want to start a relationship because of their age differences and his job as a closer? He does promise they will see each other again, but nothing states that he has feelings for her or he just likes her as a friend - though he does noticeably say he's glad he met her as his final words before freezing as a keystone.
  • Awesome Art:
    • It's Makoto Shinkai what else can you expect? The backgrounds and animation are top tier.
    • Special notice to the door-sealing sequences which are all visually stunning.
  • Awesome Music: RADWIMPS once again pulls off a strong score alongside Kazuma Jinnouchi
    • Suzume-the main theme song
    • The Abandoned Resort- an intense track that plays when Souta and Suzume close the first door.
    • Cat Chase- a jazzy piece that plays when Souta and Suzume are chasing down Daijin.
    • Sky Over Tokyo- a creepy theme that plays as the Worm swirls above Tokyo and Suzume is forced to seal away Souta.
    • Sealing The Door- a bittersweet piece that plays when Suzume comforts her younger self.
    • KANATA HALUKA-the end credits song that plays over scenes of Suzume and her aunt returning home and meeting with everyone who helped her along the way.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Daijin is rather selfish, abandons his duty, and traps Souta as the replacement keystone, but he ultimately just wanted to be Suzume's cat after she was kind to him and is crushed when she angrily rebuffs him. Not to mention that being forced to stand stationary for decades can be draining on anyone, let alone a cat.
  • Les Yay: Chika is rather quick to drop everything to help Suzume, and has a conversation with her about how stupid boys are. She also tells Suzume that the best way to wake someone up is with a kiss, but doesn't specify the gender of the person she's kissing.
  • Memetic Mutation: With Shinkai stating in an interview that he initially wanted to make the movie a sapphic romance, but was turned down, and the fact that the end product had a romance between a girl and a child's chair, it became a meme that Shinkai had intentionally made the romance as absurd as possible out of spite. This is helped by the fact Shinkai has admitted he made Souta a chair to downplay the romance.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Great Worm, a giant abomination that causes disaster whenever it escapes from the other side. In-universe it was responsible for the Great Kantō earthquake of 1923, a disaster that killed thousands of people. To make things worse it's Invisible to Normals, so you can never see when it's coming.
  • Special Effect Failure: The CGI used to create the Worm has been criticized in some corners for the awkward overlay on the 2D animation.
  • Spiritual Successor: Before the French Animated Adaptation of Haruki Murakami's Super-Frog Saves Tokyo was released, some have considered this to be the anime take on Murakami's short story, which also features giant worms causing Japanese earthquakes. Shinkai, being a fan of Murakami's works himself, acknowledged the novelist's influence in the interview.
