YMMV / Survivorman

Go To

  • Anvilicious: One thing Les has been constantly hammering home since his 2015 revival is that survival isn't macho man camping like other survival shows portray it as, from taking a fan in who had no idea what he was doing to teach him this, to bringing the topic up in almost every episode since the revival.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The 2015 revival of the series has Les frequently take more store-bought survival gear with him than in the previous, earlier seasons. Mainly it's because he wants to see how well it fairs in an actual survival situation, but not all fans are happy about this, as they feel it makes survival in the regions look far easier than they actually are.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With Man vs Wild. Man vs. Wild fans complain about this show being boring in comparison since Les usually takes the Boring, but Practical approach of setting up a solid base and attempting to signal for rescue instead of running around the area trying to rescue himself, while Survivorman fans prefer it for being real survival, instead of some of the blatantly obvious setup scenarios for the sake of entertainment Man vs. Wild has, in addition to the fact that Bear has been accounted for checking into hotels while filming episodes and sticking close to nearby roads.
  • Franchise Original Sin: One of the most criticised parts about the 2015 revival of the series is how Les relies far more on store-bought survival gear than he did in the previous seasons, often with the justifications of wanting to test them out and see how well they fare in actual survival situations. People feel it takes away from the main point of the show informing everyone how to survive off the lands he visits. However, this was still present in the earlier seasons as well, albeit with Les usually only using one store-bought survival item in every other episode, with the same justifications as the current setup.
  • Moment of Awesome: Making a hot air balloon engine into a flamethrower to defend his tent from lions. Among others.
    • Les painstakingly splitting a paper match in half, so he can start two fires with one match.
    • Starting a fire by causing a chemical reaction between medicines found in a first aid kit.
    • Making a batch of hardtack out of flour, salt, and cow fat scrounged from an abandoned gaucho cabin in Patagonia.
  • Reality Is Unrealistic: Simply on the seemingly overwhelming opinion that this show is more "real" than Man vs. Wild. After all, in an actual situation with someone fighting for their life and trying to conserve as many calories and as much energy as possible, some can find it more ridiculous that Les Stroud will do something like climbing a dangerous cliff twice so that he can get it on camera. Bear Grylls may have a camera crew following him around, but that likely means that he only needs to do something once that a survival situation would indicate you'd do once, if you had to at all.
  • Squick: Some of the things Les eats. Especially the hard-boiled seagull embryo Les eats during the Frigate Island episode. Shell and all.
