  • Covered Up: "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" both originated with The Great Society, Grace Slick's earlier band. "Somebody to Love" was the A-side of the only single they released before she left the band, which was produced by Sylvester Stewart before he became Sly Stone (the title was listed as "Someone to Love" on the label, but they still sing "somebody to love" in the chorus, suggesting that North Beach Records, the indie label it was released on, wasn't paying attention). The Great Society version is a bit lighter and has the second and third verses switched around, but it's still recognizably "Somebody to Love". Meanwhile, The Great Society's "White Rabbit", released on an album of old live recordings cobbled together after they broke up to cash in Slick's Jefferson Airplane success, is much different, running over six minutes, with the vocal not beginning until the four-and-a-half minute mark. It leans more heavily into the Spanish/North African vibe of the song's chords, with much less of a BolĂ©ro Effect, though Slick's vocal stays pretty close to what she ended up doing on this album's version.
