YMMV / Superman: American Alien

Go To

  • Awesome Art: Despite being quite a divisive comic, even detractors admire the work of seven different artists, especially the last issue with Jock drawing it.
  • Awesome Moments: Well, it is a Superman book after all. Superman throwing Lobo into the space in last issue while being heavily injured by Czarnian is nothing short of cool.
  • Broken Base: Most people are very much in love with this book, referring to it as the best Superman story in years. Others are less enamored with it, referring to Clark being massively out of character compared to other depictions and basically being turned into an Author Avatar.
  • Crack Pairing: Nobody expected see Barbara Minerva (the future Cheetah) and Clark —two characters that barely interact to each other in any media, and these few times are as enemies— having a brief romantic relationship in #3.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Barbara Minerva has become quickly one of the most popular characters of this mini-series, for being one of the more sympathetic iterations of Cheetah, and the incredibly very good chemistry thath she and Clark develop in #3.
  • Funny Moments: A drunk (actually poisoned) Clark is confronted by Deathstroke. The resulting fight is comically brief but still has times to give us some hilarious lines: “You ruin Broosh Wayne shirt!” and “Ta-da! Sard borken!”
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Issue 2 depicts three rowdy teenage punks running amok around Smallville, killing two girls and taking a family hostage and killing their pet dog. These out-of-control kids represent what would happen if they just cut loose and did whatever they felt with no care for consequences:
    • What Clark does to the punks - a young Clark still learning to control his powers - isn't pretty either. He punches one kid so hard his ribcage is shattered, and his laser vision blows off another kid's arms. The remaining threatens to kill the family, only Pete is able to knock her out in time. They later report to the police that a demon attacked them.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Mr. Mxyzptlk's cameo at the end of Issue 3 is short yet leaves quite an impression.
  • Unexpected Character: Who would ever have predicted Lobo would appear in the final issue?!
