YMMV / Supergirl (2015) S2E22 "Nevertheless, She Persisted"

Go To

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Many fans are not endeared by Mon-El's Spotlight-Stealing Squad tendencies this season, but the tragic way he is Put on a Bus is still hard to watch.
  • Ass Pull: Rhea revealing that she has Kryptonite in her body came out of nowhere, as Kara was never affected by it in their earlier bouts.
  • Broken Base: Supergirl defeating Superman is a hot topic for debate among fans. One camp says that it makes sense since this is Supergirl's show, she's always been as powerful as him canonically and that defeating her cousin in combat solidified what she's been trying to do since the very beginning: to be seen as her iconic cousin's equal (if not better). The other camp on the other hand believe that it's a disservice to Superman as a character.
  • Catharsis Factor: Rhea's well-deserved death after begging Mon-El to save her.
  • I Knew It!:
    • It was speculated beforehand that General Zod's appearance in this episode would be the result of Superman being brainwashed into seeing Kara this way. Needless to say, this theory was proven correct.
    • Cat not being fooled by Kara asking J'onn to impersonate her as Supergirl so Cat's earlier confirmation would be jossed was a popular fan theory since Season 1. This episode finally confirms it.
    • Mon-El being sent to space to save his life since that was his fate in the comics. However, while the circumstances are the same, the event plays out differently. In the comics, he was sent to the Phantom Zone. Here, he crosses a wormhole.
    • An engagement at the end of the season was revealed, and the Lena/Mon-El thing was a No-Sell among fans, who successfully guessed it would probably happen anyway, and so probably be Alex and Maggie.
  • Older Than They Think:
    • Supergirl being an even match to Superman in combat has actually happened in the comics and other adaptations.
    • The Legion of Super-Heroes used the same strategy—lead-poisoning the atmosphere—to stop a Daxamite invasion in "The Great Darkness Saga".
    • Mon-El being poisoned by lead and forced to leave earth to save his life is a plot point dating back to the earliest days of the character in the 1960s when Superboy accidentally poisons Mon-El with lead, resulting in Mon-El entering the Phantom Zone for some time until a cure was found.
  • Tough Act to Follow: The fight between Supergirl and Rhea late in the episode is generally considered to have poorer and less interesting choreography than the initial battle between Supergirl and Superman, which received a much better reception.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Superman and Martian Manhunter team-up! Superman fights off aliens and J'onn... goes on crowd control, for a single scene.
  • The Un-Twist: Practically the entire fandom believes that Cat was never fooled by Kara when the latter asked J'onn to pose as Supergirl so Cat's earlier confirmation that she's Supergirl would be tossed.
