YMMV / Super Cub

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • The soft piano covers of Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune" and "Arabesque No. 1" in the first episode.
    • The use of Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons's Winter Movement as Kogama saves Shii from freezing to near death.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Koguma doesn't feel particularly strong emotions about her mother abandoning her, which is attributed to her not getting attached to other people. The novel's narrator lampshades this.
Her sadness of being abandoned by one’s only parent, which was often highlighted in dramas and manga, was surprisingly weak even for her.
  • Fanfic Fuel: Being also set in Yamanashi has lead to crossover Fan Works between Laid-Back Camp and Super Cub.
  • Friendly Fandoms: with Laid-Back Camp, which is another series set in Yamanashi, just on the other side of Mt. Fuji.
  • Funny Moments:
    • In the first episode, Koguma buys a Super Cub for 10,000 yen after hearing it supposedly killed three people. After Koguma gets her helmet and gloves for free, she asks how many people they killed.
    • In Episode 7, after Koguma and Reiko use their cubs for delivery work, the teachers offer to reimburse them for the gas they spent. Reiko, less than impressed, snarkily points out that gas isn't the only expense for running a cub.
    • Koguma and Reiko poke fun at Shii's family's business in Episode 8.
Koguma: So a bakery with a French name making German bread.
Reiko: And she ran a Italian coffee bar at the festival. Call it global cuisine... or maybe random.
    • Koguma and Reiko proposing carrying Shii in the front basket of Koguma's Super Cub. Even funnier, Koguma actually does that for Shii after saving her in Episode 11.
    • In Episode 12, Shii convinces her parents to let her go on the cross-country trip by telling them that Koguma will protect her. Reiko then chimes in, saying that Shii will protect her, and Koguma points out that her Super Cub will protect her.
    • Also from Episode 12, Koguma expresses relief that the oceans are calm, suspecting that Reiko might sell her Cub for a surfboard in order to catch those waves. Even better, Reiko almost seems to be considering it.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • After visiting Beurre, Koguma notes that while her financial situation won't allow her to regularly visit there, she plans to stop by when she can, showing that she's made another friend.
    • After Shii falls in a river and nearly freezes to death, Koguma invites her back to her apartment, where Reiko comes to visit, to help her warm up and comfort her after her traumatic experience.
    • The girls' road trip in Episode 12 is to enable Shii, who's sick and tired of winter, to get a glimpse of spring. At the end of the journey, they finally see cherry blossoms, and by the time they return home, spring has come to their town.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • In Episode 5, Reiko manages to make it much of the way up Mt. Fuji on her Super Cub before it gives out on her. She fails more than a few times, and her Super Cub breaks down, but you've got to admire her persistence.
    • In Episode 11, Koguma, after getting a frantic call from Shii, rushes over and saves her from freezing to death.
    • In the last episode, the main characters ride over a good portion of Japan over the course of a few days in order to see the cherry blossoms at the farthest point possible.
  • Memetic Mutation: "With a Super Cub you can go anywhere you want," due to it or variations pretty much being a Once per Episode line.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The Downer Beginning of the series- Koguma, a lonely girl with no family, friends, money or aspirations for the future, is truly a girl with nothing. The melancholy mood is emphasized by the art style and lack of music.
    • In Episode 11, Shii, who narrowly avoided freezing to death and found out that her bike is broken beyond repair, breaks down and tearfully says she wants spring to come.
  • The Woobie: Koguma. She's lonely, has no plans, is abandoned by her parents, lives in an unfamiliar area all by herself, and barely has any pennies let alone cash. She's in desperate need of a big hug. Thankfully she gets better after getting the titular Super Cub.
