YMMV / Sunday Night Suicide

Go To

  • Breather Level: "Smile" is much easier than the other three songs, having fewer notes, being slower paced, lacking any Interface Screw, and being much shorter. That's not to say the song is by any means pleasant, though...
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Vs Sonic.exe, considering both are Friday Night Funkin' mods based off of well-known, if oft-mocked creepypastas from the 2000's revived through the mod itself and gaining a new fanbase. It helps they also have a moment of the opponent staring at the screen and jumpscaring the player, though Sonic.Exe's are seperate...though they do fit perfectly with the song's tempo when combined.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With Wednesday's Infidelity, as fans of WI regard it as superior to SNS in many ways, due to how the mod handles Adaptation Expansion of the original Creepypasta (a fully animated cutscene of Mickey's backstory over the latter's All There in the Manual approach), the higher quality sprites (including an era-appropriate Boyfriend redesign), more acceptable levels of Interface Screw — complete with a proper Content Warning, and thematically appropriate music. The conflict on the FNF reddit when the mod released, with posts regarding WI as better and SNS as worse, only added fuel to the fire. This was also enforced due to Box Funkin and the of SNS dev team not being on the best terms, especially after The Mayz, SNS's director at the time, lied about a collab between the two mods. Though, the rivalry between the two communities has seemingly been set aside after SNS got a new director after with a noticeable uptick in quality as well as when Box featured the upcoming 2.5 update in the Unboxing Direct.
  • Hype Backlash: The mod quickly gained popularity in the same vein as other Creepypasta FNF mods upon release, to the point where there were multiple skin mods created for it within days of its release. Outside the hype train are those who find its popularity overblown, due to finding its presentation and music generally lacking, with the controversies outside of the mod only adding to the ire.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The Retry screen. Instead of the usual game over tune from the vanilla game, you’re treated to Sensory Abuse in the form of slowed down screaming. The same screaming can be heard on the title and main menu screens.
    • The Jump Scare at the very end of "Really Happy." Holy HELL. The screen shakes like crazy, the camera zooms in on Mickey, and he has a TERRIFYING Nightmare Face, with a horrifying Slasher Smile. Also, it's VERY Loud.
    • Mickey's appearance in "Smile", where his smile turns into a massive grin pointing upwards and his eyes dripping below his chin. The fact that this Mickey is based on his appearance in the original creepypasta when the music gets reduced to someone screaming their lungs out doesn't help either.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Whatever popularity the mod had was immediately overshadowed in November 2021, when Version 2.0 of the mod was released. In the initial update, the screen would shake during the song "Really Happy" with no warning or way of turning it off. This caused a stir among many fans, especially those who suffered from epilepsy, to the point where a person was allegedly hospitalized because of the screen. Mayz's actions following this, including doubling down and initially refusing to add a warning screen, only added fuel to the fire.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: The shaking screen found in "Really Happy" is almost universally disliked. Not only is it nausea inducing due to how intense it is, it also doubles as That One Attack as it makes the arrows much harder to hit. Fortunately, a later update allows you to have an option to remove that shaking altogether.
  • Stoic Woobie: Mickey had the most important people in his life torn away from him. Goofy and Donald were killed in a car accident, Pluto was infected with rabies and had to be put down, and Minnie, his longtime sweetheart, was cheating on him with Pete. After all this has happened, he tries to endure through it all, not wanting to give any hints that there is anything wrong with him, if just for his fans.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The context as to why Mickey’s depressed can tug a few heartstrings. From having his friends die, to seeing the love of his life cheat on him, plus the stress of having to act happy for his young, adoring fans, can you really blame him for slipping over the edge?
    • "Smile", the secret song only accessible through the Freeplay menu, is a short, but ultimately tragic song. It's heavily implied that the song represents Mickey's deteriorating mental state, and it sounds like it's coming off of a record player a la Everywhere at the End of Funk. The whole song may be short, but it doesn't make it any less depressing.
