YMMV / Suicide Club

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: What to do after your boyfriend jumps off a building, landing on top of you and tearing your ear halfway off? Storming into the nearest shop and ordering a coffee, obviously.
  • Anvilicious: This movie is not about subtlety and makes sure that each person watching it is aware of the many suicides in Japan.
  • Complete Monster: Genesis—real name Muneo Suzuki—is a musician and wannabe cult leader desiring fame by any means possible, proudly seeing himself as a successor to Charles Manson. Forming his own "Suicide Club", Genesis leads his gang in committing multiple crimes to get credit for the mass suicides—specifically, Genesis enjoys taking small animals and innocent people to his "Pleasure Room", where they become playthings to Genesis' sadistic whims. When hacker Kiyoko and her sister are kidnapped by his gang, Genesis has one of his men rape and butcher a girl in front of the two, before ultimately deciding to take the life of Kiyoko's sister.
  • Cult Classic: This film has a cult status among fans of alternative cinema, in addition to being an entry film within the director's filmography.
  • Narm: Some people found that several scenes that were rather gratuitous were amusing and burst out laughing at the English Subtitling.
  • Squick:
    • The scene in which Genesis crushes to death two small animals can be disturbing for some. Because animal abuse is not severely punished under Japanese law, the fact that crush fetish videos can be obtained through Japanese stores and the distributor outside of Japan decided to censor the scene to get an R rating, it is up to the viewer whether the animal abuse actually happened or not. And made by a famous Japanese tarento, no less.
    • The various scenes in the manga of Saya and other girls cutting themselves, and Saya's head basically exploding when she hits the ground after jumping from the roof of her school.

Manga

  • Complete Monster: "Mitsuko" is a mysterious entity who seeks to prolong her lifespan. A virus-like being who possesses young girls with darkness in their hearts, Mitsuko forms several suicide cults, amassing a following of depressed girls and corrupting them into viewing her as a messiah, killing anybody who stands in their way and make them look like suicides, and finally convincing them all to commit group suicide, with Mitsuko keeping one alive to later possess and start the cycle anew. With a body count of over 150 girls spanning several decades, Mitsuko slowly corrupts the mind of Saya Koto after she survives her latest mass suicide, even trying to get her friend Kyoko to jump to her death alongside her just to spite her.
