- Values Dissonance: The book contains a lot of outdated 1980s views on pet care. For example, kitten drowning is still commonplace, no wants to spend money on moggies, it's easy to get a kitten for free, and 5 pence is considered too expensive for a kitten. The budgie, Henry, is also kept in neglectful conditions by modern standards: he's alone, in a cage all day, and is seemingly only given seed. The one time they let him out the cage, he flies out the window and then gets killed by Bootsie a few hours later.
