- Ensemble Dark Horse: Jerry Schue, Max's Hypercompetent Sidekick, is universally singled out as one of the highlights of the movie. Being the only character not to fall into being a Stupid Crook and being played by Harry Dean Stanton doesn't hurt either.
- Moral Event Horizon: Max shooting Willy in cold blood over the failure of the jewelry store heist, when it was entirely his own fault.
- One-Scene Wonder: Kathy Bates only gets two scenes as Willy's wife Selma, but they're the most heartbreaking moments in the film.
- Tear Jerker:
- Selma begging Max to leave Willy alone to avoid tempting him back into crime. Selma's clearly reluctant to do it because she knows Max genuinely cares about him, but she's also well-aware that Max's presence will only cause Willy to revert back to petty crime. Max's hurt but understanding response is just as heartbreaking, especially since he eventually disregards it and recruits Willy for the jewelry store heist.
- Jerry being shot by a cop and slowly bleeding out on the ground, while Max can only watch.
- The ending, where Max drives off into the distance alone and well-aware he'll be captured by the police and worse, as his mugshots flash across the screen.
