YMMV / Stonewall (2015)

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: As soon as the trailer came out, a lot of viewers familiar with the history of Stonewall were put off by the movie's decision to have the main character be a fictional cisgender Straight Gay White Male Lead, downplaying the important of transgender people and people of color who were a major presence at the riots. Marsha P. Johnson, a black drag queen who's generally considered the face of the event in public consciousness, is reduced to a minor comic relief role, and other big names like Sylvia Rivera are completely absent. This level of historical inaccuracy killed the interest of queer viewers who would otherwise wanted to see a movie about the defining event of the LGBT rights movement. As for straight viewers, the few with enough interest in the subject to even watch the movie felt insulted by the director insinuating that they needed a bland white kid from the Midwest to relate to. This resulted in a major Box Office Bomb, barely making back 1% of its 17 million-dollar budget, and reviews were similarly unkind.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: The movie's critics have acknowledged that Jonny Beauchamp gives a heart wrenching performance as Ray, to the point of nearly forgiving the otherwise dodgy practice of having a cis actor playing a trans character. It's agreed that Ray would have been a much better main character than Danny.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The fact that the film makes Marsha P. Johnson, widely considered to be the face of the Stonewall riots and one of the most beloved and revered LGBTQ activists of the 20th century, a minor character (and comic relief!) is a major reason that it is reviled among queer audiences.
