YMMV / Star Wars: Black Spire

Go To

  • Awesome Moments:
    • Vi stands up to Kriki's boss, inspiring her to join the Resistance.
    • Dolin returns home for the first time after joining the Resistance. His disapproving grandmother tries to throw him back out, but he refuses to be intimidated.
“This is my home. I grew up here. I buried my parents here. I carved the chair you’re sitting in and spun the yarn you’re weaving with. Unless you toss out everything I made, then this is still my house, too.”
    • Oh-li and Jenda, two street vendors Vi only briefly interacted with, are harassed and beaten by the First Order for information on Vi but they refuse to give anything up. Vi then steps in to help them, even though this results in her being captured.
    • Zade's anti-First Order speech in the cantina, punctuated by him shooting a stormtrooper who shows up at the end.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Pretty much everything out of Pook's vocabulator.
    • A Trandoshan salesman sells Vi a pair of "used, lightly ragged sleeping bags that he swore no one had died in."
    • Mubo, the droid maker, being so excitable he absentmindedly swings around a blowtorch.
    • The Cantina's long list of rules, including Loony Laws like "No ripping off people's limbs", suggesting some past Noodle Incident. Locals joke that all those rules were created after a single night.
    • Oga's introductory scene, berating her adulterous Wookiee lover and then murdering him in the middle of her cantina.
    • Archex mistakenly thinking Vi was trying to kiss him. Peak Cringe Comedy.
    • Archex's first visit to Black Spire Outpost.
Archex: I like this place. Th’outpost. Things don’t hurt as much here.
Vi: That's the alcohol. It numbs the pain.
    • Dolin's frustration at his lack of romantic options. "I only know nine girls my age! And I'm related to six of them!"
    • When Grana objects to Vi recruiting Dolin.
Grana: He's not an adult! He's only twenty-five!
Vi: I try not to judge other cultures, but...
    • Archex names the disgusting giant worm-like creature that attacks him the Hux Worm.
    • Zade's introduction, which involves him flirting with cantina patrons, ranting about the First Order, and drunkenly standing up to some stormtroopers.
    • Kriki asks Vi to guess the code word to the comm link she just rigged up. Vi's guess? "Snoke's butt."
    • Archex tells an injured Vi that she's not getting as much rest as Pook recommended. When she points out that he never follows Pook's instructions, he uncomfortably switches the subject to the local holochess team.
    • Zade remembers how, as a twelve-year-old boy, he would dress up as a Jawa so he could buy alcohol. And sometimes it worked.
    • The darkly comedic description of how the First Order killed Zade's partner Valoss.
“This is illegal theft of privately owned goods,” Valoss said reasonably.
“Pew,” the officer responded unreasonably, speaking through his blaster.
    • In one of his speeches to the cantina, Zade claims the First Order stole his cargo, killed his partner, impounded his ship, and left him stranded on Batuu without any money.
Heckler: Then how'd you get the drinks?
      Zade: Ask your mother.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Vi contacts General Organa for help, only to be told the Resistance doesn't have any supplies or troops to spare.
Vi: "Hope I can live up to your trust, General, but the odds are not good.”
Leia: “Never tell me the odds. And even if you did, I’d still bet on you. Good luck, and may the Force be with you.”
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: In only his second appearance in canon, Cardinal is killed at the end of the book, eliminating the possibility of him meeting up with the rest of Resistance and Finn, or running around Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge with Vi and Chewbacca, or guest-starring in Star Wars Resistance...
