YMMV / Star Trek: The Next Generation S4E7 "Reunion"

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: While Word of God says that it was Duras who fatally poisoned K'mpec, many fans actually prefer to think that it was Gowron who was the guilty party, not only due to his less-than-subtle threats towards K'Ehleyr, but because it would tie in better with the massive Took a Level in Jerkass he subsequently went through in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Given what Gowron would later do over on Deep Space Nine, in retrospect it's obvious that the Federation were going to be screwed in the longer run no matter who Picard chose as the new chancellor, it was just a matter of how much. Gowron was still the better option in that Duras would have joined with the Romulans (Duras's sisters Lursa and B'etor tell Picard that if their house won their war against Gowron, it would mean the end of the Klingon/Federation alliance), would be unlikely to team up with the Federation against the Dominionnote , and might have even started a war at the time of the Borg attack just to deliver the Federation a Coup De Grace. Even so, this was less Black and White, and more Black and Grey.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Some fans have argued that Worf was entirely in the right to do what he did to Duras, not just for avenging K'Ehleyr, but preventing the deranged Duras from becoming Chancellor, and that Picard should, if anything, have been commending his actions rather than handing him a formal reprimand. While it's true that story-wise Duras' death was a richly-deserved case of Laser-Guided Karma, and that Worf's actions were entirely proper from the Klingon point of view, from the Starfleet point of view, Worf went rogue and killed a foreign dignitary; hardly an action that Picard could be seen to endorse. What's more, by his own admission Worf didn't know much about Gowron's past or personality, meaning it was really pure dumb luck that Worf ended up killing a sadistic, murderous lunatic instead of someone who "only" turned out to be an untrustworthy warmonger.
  • Narm Charm: As Gowron confronts Duras, he says "You will die slowly, Duras...", suddenly turning his chair mid-sentence to face him directly, capping off with a Slasher Smile. It's so silly but so entertaining.
  • Too Cool to Live: K'Ehleyr.
