• Fan Fic Fuel: What happened to the Malcorians after the events of this episode? Did Durken succeed in changing their attitudes towards space travel and aliens? Did they ever restart their warp drive program? Did the Federation ever return and succeed in making an open first contact with them? Did the Malcorians ever join the Federation?
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Picard's recounting of their history with the Klingons becomes more amusing when we see the Star Trek: Enterprise pilot episode "Broken Bow", with Archer and company's meeting with the Klingon High Council and Hoshi's assertion that Archer doesn't want to know what the Chancellor said to him (in Klingon).
  Picard: Centuries ago, disastrous contact with the Klingon Empire led to decades of war.
• One-Scene Wonder: Bebe Neuwirth only has a single scene playing Lanel, but it's by far the scene that most people remember from the episode, thanks to her perfectly capturing the quirky alien scientist who's out to explore strange new worlds of intimacy with Riker.
• What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: Malcoran society's paranoia and social conservatism seem to be a metaphor for Reagan/Bush-era America.
