- Ensemble Dark Horse: George "Sam" Kirk may be a supporting character, but his journey from "mild-mannered xenobiologist" to "man willing to study the Gorn up close so as to better kill them" has inspired more than a few memes.
- Special Effect Failure: Part of the wreckage that Chapel is trapped in aboard the remains of the Cayuga is clearly some scrunched up tin foil.
- Unexpected Character: Did ye expect Montgomery Scott t'appear, laddie?
- Visual Effects of Awesome: The adult Gorn is actually a fully functional prosthetic suit (barring the tail, which is CGI out of practical) instead of a digital effect as shown in the Ready Room covering the production of this episode and it is an absolutely enormous costume that is a vast far cry from the charming yet dated as hell cheap original Gorn prosthetics from TOS.
