- Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Garth choose to blow up Marta of all people for his demonstration (instead of one of his other underlings) simply because he can, or because he noticed that she was getting just a little too attached to Kirk?
- Best Known for the Fanservice: Aside from the Spot the Imposter moment near the end, Marta's dance is often the thing most fans remember about this episode.
- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The dinner party. Most of it got cut from the remastered scene, but most of Marta's dance remains. According to Spock, her dance is the equivalent of the Vulcan Hokey-Pokey. Not very nice, considering that Yvonne Craig is a trained ballerina.
- Canon Fodder: The Battle of Axanar is the sort of Noodle Incident that has fans wanting more information on it, to the point that Fanon interpretations abound. One example starts with Prelude to Axanar.
- Ham and Cheese: Garth is commonly seen as the only thing that makes the episode worthwhile.
- Theiss Titillation Theory: Like Elphaba, Marta clashes with everything, especially that very 1960s-colorful robe she wears at first. Then she wears a very brief periwinkle garment accessorized with shells that clack when she moves.
- Unintentional Period Piece: The secret code based on chess moves uses the old-style descriptive notation still popular in The '60s, before it was supplanted by algebraic notation in The '70s (becoming officially sanctioned by FIDE in 1981). That actually makes it a better code as even fewer people would know it.
