YMMV / Star Trek S2 E3 "The Changeling"

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Kirk actually think up his Logic Bomb to Nomad ("Jackson Roykirk, your Creator, is dead; you have mistaken me for him; you are in error") in the final confrontation in Main Engineering, or had he been keeping it in his back pocket ever since he realized the Mistaken Identity in case Nomad proved itself too dangerous to live, and it finally reached the point of last resort for him to employ it and get the probe to destroy itself?
  • Catharsis Factor: Nomad having a Villainous Breakdown and its eventual climactic self-destruction in deep space are particularly satisfying after all the crew members it has killed, incapacitated and mind-wiped while being insufferably arrogant about "imperfections" and "biological infestations" over the course of the episode.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: At the end of the episode, Kirk laments that they had to destroy Nomad, as Nomad's medical skills would have been handy. He laments that "It's not easy losing a bright and promising son."..."What a doctor it would've made. My son, the doctor. Kind of gets you right there, doesn't it?" while thumping a fist over his heart. Fifteen years later, in 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, we meet Kirk's actual son, Dr. David Marcus. Then in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, David is tragically stabbed to death, in the heart.
  • Narm: When Nomad at the end starts speaking with its voice raised into a higher pitch while shaking and shorting itself out, thanks to Kirk's trademark Logic Bomb treatment. Although, at the same time, it can be satisfying Narm Charm and/or Catharsis Factor after how arrogant, insufferable and untouchable Nomad has been until that point in the episode.
  • Older Than They Think: This is technically the first instance of a starship in the franchise travelling at Warp 10, long before the much more notorious instance on Star Trek: Voyager. However, the warp drive scale was altered between this series and Star Trek: The Next Generation, so the "Warp 10" achieved in this episode is only equivalent to about Warp 8.5 on the newer version.
