YMMV / Star Trek S1 E10 "The Corbomite Maneuver"

Go To

  • Epileptic Trees: With Balok revealed in the episode's ending to be an entirely benevolent character, it leaves the exact nature of his Secret Test of Character up for debate. Some fans like to believe that he was originally just interested in seeing how the Enterprise crew faced seemingly certain death and would have revealed his true nature after that, but he found Kirk's ploy with the "Corbomite device" so audaciously clever that he decided to string Kirk along just to see how far he'd take things.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Bones needles the svelte Captain Kirk over having put on a few pounds. William Shatner had issues with his weight all the way through the series and was constantly exercising. In more recent years, he has been having serious weight problems.
    • The next time Starfleet encounters a mysterious cube in space, they won't deal with it so easily.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The puppet which Balok uses to conceal his true identity, with its pale, bluish skin, bald oversized head, elongated nose and scowling face looks a tad like Squidward Quincy Tentacles.
    • Although non-canon, little did Kirk know that corbomite reflectors would become an actual device for Sovereign-class starships.
