YMMV / Star Trek: Picard S3E10 "The Last Generation"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Has Q shown up in the stinger merely to test Jack, or is he also there to watch out for Jean-Luc's son in his own way? Or is he doing it because he enjoyed all those years he spent tormenting Jean-Luc too much to not try and get the ball rolling again?
  • Continuity Lock-Out: The collapsed state of the Borg Collective and its Queen (and much of her ranting about what the Federation did to them) will make no sense without knowledge of VOY's series finale and how Team Janeway infected and fire-bombed them on their way out of the Delta Quadrant over 20 years earlier.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • The showrunners themselves pointed out in an interview that an entire generation of Starfleet officers has now been through this massive event, which they'd like to explore the ramifications of if there's a future series. Many will have been traumatized and others may actually miss the Collective, as the showrunners say.
    • The one year gap between the final battle and the epilogue. What was the Enterprise-D up to?
  • He's Just Hiding: While the episode tries to indicate that this is the absolute, unquestionable, final end of the Borg Collective, there are naturally some fans who refuse to believe that they are gone for good — especially considering that the episode seems to imply that the Voyager crew managed to wipe out the entire Collective except for this one cube in their series finale, which contradicts what had been established in previous episodes of both this series and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Picard's final line during the poker game about believing that the stars are in his favor and subsequently winning the final poker hand. According to Terry Matalas, Patrick Stewart was actually winning because the rest of the TNG Cast had rigged the poker game in his favor. In other word, the stars — as in his co-stars — were literally in his favor!
    • Back in the Star Trek: Lower Decks Season One finale, the Pakleds call the original Titan "another Enterprise". They were off one ship and by twenty-one years.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Troi's comment of "Why am I sensing enjoyment?" when picking up Data's newfound "gut reaction" has an accompanying shit-eating grin from Data (who is facing away from Troi at that moment), but could easily be interpreted as picking up on every Trekkie's shit-eating grin while watching that scene.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Walter Koenig returning (albeit voice only) as Pavel Chekov's son, Federation President Anton Chekovnote  delivering a speech warning others to stay away from Earth, itself a callback to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
    • John de Lancie returning as Q one more time for The Stinger. While it had initially been reported Q would also be appearing in Season Three back during Season Two, this subsequently seemed to be a red herring meant to conceal the character's death in "Farewell". So, Q's return here is a surprise, as De Lancie's cameo was successfully kept under wraps — although this being Q, many in the audience had suspected he wasn't truly gone. After all, as Q himself loves to put it, "The Trial never ends..."
