YMMV / Star Trek: Klingon Academy

Go To

  • Awesome Music: This game features Inon Zur's first video game score, and it is every bit as awesome as you would expect from the man.
  • Complete Monster: Melkor, son of G'Iogh, is a member of the House of G'Iogh, a powerful family within in the Klingon Empire. After his brother is killed trying to start a coup against the Klingon High Council, Melkor devises a far more ambitious plan to seize control of the Empire. When the elderly Chancellor of the Empire dies, Melkor claims the title of Emperor and starts a civil war to seize power. Opposed by Gorkon, the rightful successor to the Chancellor's office, and General Chang, a hardline anti-Federation officer who realizes Melkor's rule would be a disaster for the Empire, Melkor manages to conquer a Klingon star base, which he rigs to explode, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Klingon officers. Conquering the Tal'Ihnor Gates, a star system that is the Empire's chief source of energy, Melkor has one of his officers activate a doomsday weapon, destroying the entire star system. After losing all support within the Klingon Empire, Melkor convinces the Romulans to back his claim, leading a Romulan invasion of the Klingon home world.
  • Moment of Awesome: Torlek learns that Melkor and his Romulan allies are going to attack Qo'nos, and have staged a False Flag Operation to make Chang think that the Federation is attacking the Empire to distract him. When told of this, Chang refuses to believe Torlek, who then tells Chang he can pursue his own war with the Federation; but only after looking Torlek in the face and telling him that everything Chang taught him about honor and duty was a lie. Chang cannot refute this, and admits that Torlek learned from him all too perfectly. See it here.
  • Player Punch: The mission in the Tal'Ihnor Gates system. You uncover Melkor's plot to hand the system over to the Romulans, and at first it looks like you're going to rout his forces. Then you get a message from your former instructor, K'Mak, who reveals that Melkor is forcing him to detonate a supernova weapon which will annihilate the entire system and cripple the Klingon Empire as a whole. Despite your attempt to talk him down, K'Mak says that he is duty-bound to set off the device, and leaves you with this message:
"Tell the General... tell him I regret he will never find me in the halls of Sto-vo-kor."
  • That One Boss: The USS Enterprise-A during the final mission in the game's academy segment. Having a higher maximum impulse speed and more weapons than your ship would make it a tough opponent at the best of times, but that section also doubles up as an Escort Mission. This means that unless you damage the impulse engines of the Enterprise in a timely fashion, she'll quickly get out of range and destroy the ships you're meant to be protecting, causing you to fail the mission.
