• Fridge Logic: A plot thread is that the translator can't get a read on the language, so they need Hoshi (who is concussed) to get back in shape enough to work it out. But the language is Romulan, an offshoot of Vulcan; the translator should be easily able to identify similarities and work it out, given the far more unknown languages it manages to handle before and after.
  • The Romulans split off from the Vulcans approximately 1500 years before this episode, and language drift can go quite far.
  • It's also a possibility that the explosion knocked out a UT sub-processor that would have been able to deal with the problem
