• Badass Decay: In their appearances on TNG and DS9, the Nausicaans were depicted as an intimidating, thuggish race who talked in Hulk Speak. This episode changes them into a bunch of generic bad guys who talk in a completely normal manner, which comes across so divorced from their previous appearances that some fans have semi-seriously suggested that the pirates were actually Orions disguised as Nausicaans.
• Strawman Has a Point: Archer tries to berate the freighter crew for taking a prisoner and fighting back against the Nausicaans. Now, while Ryan was going a bit far in taking on a pirate base in a freighter with few weapons, he does have a point as Starfleet has done very little to defend its freighters. Even when Ryan directly asks about what will happen the next time a freighter is attacked, Mayweather effectively ignores the question and instead gives him a "The Reason You Suck" Speech over a completely different issue, namely his resentful attitude toward people who'd rather serve in Starfleet than work on freighters.
