- Card-Carrying Villain: Kol makes no attempt to pretend that he cares about anything but his own power and domination, or that following him would lead to any benefit for anyone else.
- Narm: That weird beeping noise when Discovery takes a torpedo hit about a minute into the battle.
- Prop Recycling: The Gagarin appears to be the model for the Shenzhou flipped over and with a few details changed (note the row of windows ahead of the bridge on both ships). Of course, it wouldn't be Star Trek if the ship models weren't recycled.
- Special Effect Failure: Saru running along the top of the cliff to stop Burnham is a painfully obvious CGI model, especially given that a moment earlier Doug Jones had been shown running while in costume as Saru, and the movements of the CGI model were nothing like his.
