• Glurge: The episode really tries to hammer in how happy and innocent the colonists are, in order to justify the crew deciding to preserve their existence at the cost of their lives. The matter is severely undercut by the implication they have no contact with the outside world and are farmers with only a few scraps of technology salvaged from the Defiant to make their lives easier, and they were founded when the crew of the Defiant gave up any hope of rescue and decided to start new lives on the planet.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The settlers come off as remarkably callous and dissonant towards Sisko and his crew:
  • When they inform them they crash-landed on the planet and founded the colony, they seem gleeful to meet their ancestors instead of trying to break the news gently. Yedrin also tries to trick the crew into crashing the Defiant to preserve a Stable Time Loop, and as Sisko later points out when he learns the truth, no one has the right to ask Kira or anyone else to sacrifice their lives for their sake, it's their choice.
  • Dax had two centuries to consider alternative options across however many hosts it's been through since the original accident and yet shows no sign that any of the hosts have considered doing anything but let events unfold the way they did "originally".
